Surviving DVT: My 21-Year Journey

My name is Clare Prince. At the time of writing this, I am 46 years old. I live at home with my husband Mark. Our two children, Hannah and Luca, and our dog Elmo who is also part of our family.

In 2004, four days after I turned 25, my health declined dramatically. I developed a massive DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) in my Ileo – femoral vein in my left leg. Little did I know at that point that this would change my life forever.

Twenty one years on I have decided to begin to write down my experiences. These range from my first diagnosis and strokes through to pregnancy. I will also cover my experiences of clots in the liver and lung and periods of endless repeated clotting. Lastly, I will discuss my most recent diagnosis of compartment syndrome and residual foot drop.

Why now? I always avoided sharing my story in writing. I had a bad experience with a journalist who wanted to dramatize it. Making it scary for other other readers rather than helping. My story is pretty unique and when told in the wrong manner can scare and worry. So here I am telling it with the disclaimer that: Most people who have a clot take their anticoagulants. They go on to live a long, happy, clot-free life. I, like a few others are the exception.

So, patients going through similar experiences, whether it’s your first DVT or your twentieth, you are not alone. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and, “You Can!”……
